Reed-Care General

Reed is a natural product. To keep your thatched roof beautiful for as long as possible, it’s important to protect the reed stem. This is now possible! By applying Reed-care after the roofing work, you protect your roof preventively and in a natural way.

Together with Wincoop Thatchers, we have been developing Reed-Care for over 10 years. After extensive testing, we have arrived at a unique composition that preserves and protects reed.

A Look into the Reed

Structure of the Reed Stem

To understand how a thatched roof behaves after construction or renovation, in-depth knowledge of the cell wall and structure of the reed stem is necessary. By knowing the composition and properties of this cell wall, we can develop targeted preventive and sustainable measures.

  • Middle lamella; contains mainly Pectin
  • Primary cell wall; contains cellulose and hemicellulose
  • Secondary cell wall; contains lignin (wood substance) and possibly cutin (cork substance)

Due to the reduced release of dry matter into rainwater, the reed remains in good condition longer, extending the lifespan of the roof. These findings indicate that treating a thatched roof is better for the durability of the roof itself and helps prevent decay.

Furthermore, at Statera-Ecosolutions, we are always innovating and trying to further develop Reed-Care in the areas of bird damage, fungi, and fire retardation. Below you can see the difference (the right is treated with the product)

Get to Know Reed-Care

Reed-care
Composed of 100% natural substances that ensure the reed stem is much less susceptible to decay and weathering. Substances that belong to the life processes and resilience of the reed stem have been carefully selected and have led to the product Reed-Care.

Research and Development

One of the experiments conducted took place on a test roof, with the aim of investigating the effect of the treatment on the drainage water. We compared thatched roofs that were and were not treated by analyzing the rainwater that was drained after four weeks. The results clearly show that treated thatched roofs have a positive impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Reed-Care

It only works preventively, so the roof must be swept first.

This strongly depends on the condition of the roof and the quality of the thatch. Always have a certified thatcher provide appropriate advice and a quote beforehand.

It can only be applied professionally and according to instructions by a certified thatcher. Always ensure that copper and zinc are pre-wetted and rinsed afterwards.

The applicator will first wet the glass and rinse it again after treatment.

No, the chance of damage is minimal, and professional application will prevent any potential damage.

No, when applied professionally, it will not reach the ground, and if it does due to spraying, your pets will not be affected by it.

We advise application below 25 degrees Celsius and in frost-free weather during winter. It's important that it can absorb well into the thatched roof without being washed away by rain.

Depending on the amount of rain, the effectiveness may be affected, but experience has taught us that a light shower has no impact.

We advise having the treatment carried out every year to guarantee the preventive effect.

It has a slightly acidic smell but does not cause any nuisance in any case.

After just one day, the smell will be barely noticeable or not at all.

We only make Reed-Care available to professional thatchers to prevent any form of improper use.
